Thompson Psychotherapy & Counselling

About Your Therapist,
Graeme Thompson

I’m Graeme, a husband, a father of two, and a therapist who has the privilege of come alongside individuals as they navigate the complexities of being human. What follows is a reflection on who I am as a therapist, then a bit about who I am as a person.

I specialize in helping adults (ages 19 and above) heal and grow from the challenges that life presents them. My practice addresses a range of concerns, though I’ve developed particular expertise working with people experiencing insomnia. Particularly those facing insomnia while also experiencing other mental health or physical health concerns.

Though a therapeutic approach that is flexible and grounded in evidence-based methods, I support clients in transforming their suffering and pain into meaningful values-congruent thriving. We will work together to face the uncomfortable and unknown parts of you, bringing them a sense of being seen, understood, and supported. Doing so will create the space for insight, integration, meaning, and changes aligned with your values.

How I Help

Working with me is about deeply engaging with, understanding, and developing the tools necessary to make a meaningful change in your life. To do this, I will invest heavily into cultivating the type of therapeutic alliance with you that is characterized by authenticity, understanding, and hope. I don’t show up as a neutral emotionally removed viewer of your experience, I show up with honesty, caring, and sincerity.

My guiding aim will be to (re)vitalize your own capacity to heal and grow. As such, you will find that I seek to appreciate and make sense of the unique context that makes you you, then individualize treatment to this. You’ll find that I’m not big on advice-giving or telling you exactly what to do (though I don’t avoid this either), but rather use curiosity, interest, and an encouraging presence to aid you in finding your own path.

You’ll find that my therapeutic superpowers include passionate curiosity, a sense for drawing out meaning and purpose, and a steady presence that is attuned to you. I feel with my clients, laugh and celebrate with them, and seek to encounter them both as they are and who they can be.

Therapeutic Influences

Sometimes it’s helpful to get a sense of someone by hearing who they seek to be influenced by and learn from.

Some of the thinkers, speakers, writers, researchers, and clinicians that I tune into and whose contributions influence my therapeutic work include:

  • Dr. Irvin Yalom
  • Dr. Rollo May
  • Russ Harris, Ph.D.
  • John and Julie Gottman, Ph.D.s
  • Carl Rogers, Ph.D.
  • Dr. Viktor Frankl
  • Daryl Chow, Ph.D.
  • Steven Hayes, Ph.D.
  • Ernest Becker
  • Dr. Louis Cozolino
